I love true heroes, those men that could truly make a woman swoon and follow them, just because of their raw masculinity, assuredness in themselves, and concern over others welfare. I do not mind the 'broken hero' who needs a heroine who can heal his heart. I would just rather not read about an overbearing man who has anger management problems, and overpowers a woman.
I truly believe that the heart of a hero beats in today's men, they have just lost their heroines. Of course, in those old stories, many of a hero died young, leaving a widow and children without a father. This does not happen today. Could those 'old type' heroes survive the long stretch? Could they 'hold what is theirs' for an entire lifetime? That remains to be seen. There is so much give and take in a relationship.
I once heard a song that said 'Love is a verb' -- meaning, that if you are not 'doing something loving' for someone, then there is no love. This is so true. Romance is not something you feel, it is something you do to make someone else feel special. At the same time, a person who is too wounded can have love poured into them day-and-night and they will never feel loved.
This may be why I do not like the new type of hero. He is too angry, too vengeful. It is just difficult for my romantic heart to believe this man has any room left in his heart for the love of a woman.
