For the Favor of a Heroine

The women gave their heros a favor to carry into battle. This was a scarf, or other personal item. It would smell of roses, lavendar, or other flowers that permiated the women's clothing.

While fidelity was never a requirement of a good marriage, a token reminded the man that he was fighting for something back home. This could be vitaly important in a culture where men were gone for years fighting for their king.
