I am writing The Pawn at an earlier time than The Pledge. The Pawn startes when the Gordon Clan, and the Earl of Moray, try to challenge Mary Queen of Scot. The Gordon's son sees himself as a suitable consort for the 'once Daupin of France - now widow - and with no claim on the french throne.' How different Mary's life would have been if she had not been married to a boy who never impregnated her. If she had a child, she would have remained regent Queen of France.
Fate plays droll tricks, and Mary fell from power to become the Queen of a very dull country ruled by fighting nobles, and influenced by Knox. This was an amazing time. Her son, King James, rewrote much of the new bible - himself, and then had older versions destroyed. In fact, the King James bible was not a project of the church, but a statuet of laws that was passed through the privy councel and made a legal document. Not surprising, the boy who grew up under the Regnet queen of france, with the 'whore' queen as his monther, and the 'bastard of Henry' as his godmother, would write a book so anti- woman. This is not to say that the bible does not maintain the inspired message of love humanity, worship God, and follow the saviour. But - there are those who would love to see old text, and old files from before King Jame's version of the bible.
I wondered what it would be like if a gentle woman with second sight (or in Christian circles, the gift of phrophecy) was dropped into the mix.
